worn out and abandoned
in the basement of a building
that he moved to with his second wife

two wheels and a bike frame
that had been there for decades
collecting dust, long distance calls

so I brought it to the shop
and had it all tuned up
to run like new down the avenue
like nothing ever had happened to
the wheels when they were apart

i'm mindful of the moments
the rare time we're given
to exercise, ride side by side

in some ways it's a kindness
a gift I've provided
a starting gun, a second run
to make up for lost time
if there was ever such a crime
a chance to prove what I thought I knew
but in all honesty it's a chance
for him to know me

but will he ride my bike when I'm gone?
will it remind him that I'm far away from home?
will he ride my bike when I'm gone?
or will it reside back in the basement it was found?
